Part 1: How to position an area rug and choose the correct size for living rooms

There are so many kinds of area rugs on the market in different materials, colors, patterns, and sizes; it's becoming an art to choose the right one. Of course, the trick is to keep the overall design of the room in mind. But that can be more complicated than you may think. Choosing the right size area rug is central to your interior decorating: it is not just an afterthought.

Here are some considerations that will help you to choose the perfect size area rugs for your home and how to position them:

  • Large living room area rugs
One of the first things to consider is how many furniture legs will be placed on the rug. Will the rug define a lounge area within the room, with all the couch and chair legs on the rug? How will that look?

If the rug doesn't almost fill the room, with a thin border around it, it may make the lounge area look squashed up. Or it may help pull a large room together and create a warmer, more intimate space.

  • Smaller living room rugs
What about a smaller rug, with the furniture pushed back a little so that only the front legs sit on the rug and the back legs on the flooring?

Then again, if you wish the rug to be a notable centerpiece in the room, hiding it under chairs and couches won't work. In this case, it's better to choose a smaller rug that compliments (or rather, is complimented by) a coffee table that shows it off to its best effect.

In Part Two of ‘how to position an area rug and choose the correct size', we will look at choosing and placing area rugs in other rooms.
