Engineered hardwood flooring vs solid hardwood flooring

Engineered hardwood flooring vs solid hardwood flooring

Hardwood flooring is any product manufactured from timber, and designed for use as flooring or for construction purposes. Wood is a common choice as a flooring material and can come in various styles, colors, cuts, and species. When choosing the best features and looks for your home, it is beneficial to know which flooring will look best with regards to the design you are going for. Apart from that, the type of wood you use could hugely influence the durability.

What is the difference between engineered hardwood flooring and solid hardwood flooring?

  • Solid hardwood flooring consists of solid hardwood and only hardwood, from top to bottom and side to side. Engineered hardwood flooring is a layered product consisting of thin hardwood on top of a base of high-quality plywood.
  • When installing solid hardwood flooring, it should be installed on or above grade, using the nail down or staple down installation method. Engineered hardwood can be installed in a wide range of interiors: on, below or above grade. Depending on the construction type, nail down, glue down or floating methods of installation may be used.
  • When installing flooring in a moisture-prone environment such as a bathroom, it is not recommended to use solid hardwood flooring. Engineered hardwood flooring will be a better option in such environments. You can install solid hardwood flooring in places such as living areas, bedrooms, hallways and dining rooms. While it’s wise to avoid solid wood in kitchens, installation can be successful if waterproof mats are placed near the sink and dishwasher.
  • Engineered hardwood flooring can be installed in the same areas of your home mentioned for solid wood flooring such as living areas and bedrooms.
