Carpet FAQs

We are considering wall-to-wall carpet in our livingroom and bedrooms. Should we be concerned about using wool carpet in a tropical climate where temperatures and humidity are often high?

A: These are just some of the benefits of using wool carpet in tropical climates:

Wool is able to absorb large amount of moisture at times of high humidity, and releases this moisture again when the atmosphere is dry, thus acting as an atmospheric buffer.

Wool fiber can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture vapor without feeling damp.

When walking barefoot on wool carpets, it feels cooler, less sticky and more comfortable than synthetic fiber carpets.

When wool releases moisture, it feels and is cooler. The best wool carpets carry the 'Wools of New Zealand' brand.

What's the value of New Zealand wool vs. synthetic fibers?

A : Few materials are more natural or more beautiful than New Zealand wool, making it the perfect choice for carpets and rugs. New Zealand wool is one of the purest, most ecological products in the world – a biodegradable and renewable resource produced using methods that are
friendly to the environment. Evolved to protect sheep in the most extreme climatic conditions, wool has a natural superiority over other fibers and is durable, flame-retardant and resistant to dirt and crushing. New Zealand wool is very pure and white, enabling it to be dyed to the purest, most fashionable color.

This may sound like a silly question, but I suffer from allergies. I've been told I should consider wool carpeting. Why?

A: Allergies are wide-spread in the developed world and the incidence is increasing for two
main reasons – a greatly increased number of synthetic substances produced, and the improved diagnosis of allergic conditions. Wool fibers are too long and too coarse to be inhaled and therefore do not affect asthma sufferers. Wool is a non-allergenic fiber and does not promote the growth of bacteria or dust mites, nor does it give off harmful emissions. Cumulative evidence now suggests strongly that carpets have actually a beneficial effect on people’s health, provided of course, that they are maintained regularly and properly.

Is wool carpet harder to clean than synthetics?

A: Wool carpet is extremely responsive to cleaning. Wool carpets release soil and stains more readily than man-made fibers thereby reducing the need to use harsh cleaning chemicals, which in turn is positive for the environment. Regular vacuuming will prolong the life of the carpet.

Just how durable is wool carpet?

A : Over time wool has proven itself to be a high performing product. High traffic commercial installations such as The World Trade Center opted for wool because of its durability, ease of maintenance, long wear and beauty. Just think how durable it can be in your home!

Hardwood Floor FAQs

Are real wood floors a good financial investment?

A: Unlike any of our other basic needs, such as food and clothing, the homes we use for shelter tend to be the only purchase that appreciates in value with proper care and thoughtful improvements. Studies show the majority of American Realtors™ believe hardwood flooring is one of the best investments a homeowner can make.

I love the warm look of hardwood floors. But can it hold up with four active children and two dogs?

A: In short, the answer is – you bet! Award Hardwood Floors with WearMax advanced ceramic finish is just one of the more durable products on the market. The WearMax finish creates the most wear-resistant, stain-resistant and easy-to-clean wood floors – and is tough enough to stand up to the heaviest traffic. In fact, WearMax advanced ceramic finish is based on the same materials used for the ceramic nose shield protecting NASA shuttle astronauts during their 17,500 mph re-entries. Bring on the kids and the dogs!

WearMax sounds tough, but how stain-resistant is it against permanent ink or ball-point pens?

A: Not only will WearMax resist ink stains, even the most challenging household substances won’t leave a permanent mark or stain, even if you don’t clean it up until the next day. These are just a few of the test materials which did not affect the WearMax finish: Acetone, Alcohol, Asphalt Sealer, Bleach, Coffee, Fingernail Polish, Lipstick, Milk, Mustard, Soda, Juice, Jam, Wine, Ketchup, Vinegar, Beer, Black Shoe Polish and Wax Crayon.

Hardwood Shutters FAQs

Will shutters block the view?

A : California Hardwood Shutters are designed with much wider louvers than the old style shutters of yesterday. Because there is less structure, the view is greater.

What type of wood is used to make California Hardwood Shutters?

A: Our wood shutters are made from Alder, a fast growing, renewable hardwood species grown in the Northwest, primarily Oregon and Washington. Alder also happens to be a hardwood chosen by many fine furniture manufacturers. Because of its even texture and grain, Alder provides an unsurpassed quality surface for a fine furniture finish. Alder doesn’t contain pitch, sap or mineral streaks, so it won’t have bleed-through problems which could mar the finish.

Will hardwood shutters warp?

A: Actually, wood performs much better than most synthetics when properly treated. At the mill, Alder is dried to a 6% to 8% moisture content to match the typical in-house moisture level. It’s even-textured grain combined with maintaining proper moisture levels insures the very minimum amount of warpage possible.

Window Treatments FAQs

window treatments
Can draperies be adapted to tropical climates without that "heavy" look?

A : Most definitely. A tropical look is partially achieved by the use of lightweight, airy fabrics such as cotton scrims or mesh wovens. In addition, California Designs specializes in many colorwraps of fabulous tropical prints and companion plaids and stripes – all of which are a far cry from the “stuffy” northern look of heavy, formal layered drapery.

Is it possible to mix some drapery with other window treatments, such as blinds, and still achieve a fabulous tropical look?

A: Many window treatment styles are decorative framing of the openings with “functional” treatments inside. Try wood blinds with a fabric valance or stationary side panels on a decorative wood pole. The result is a much lighter, tropical look, due to less fabric being used.

Will California Designs match custom drapery with other accessories such as bedding and pillows?

A: Yes, and we’ll give you lots of choices from our beautiful lines of fabrics.
